Nashville, Tennessee. — June 19 ,2020. Today, Tennessee passed a bill into law protecting unborn babies from abortion from the moment their heart beats – as early as six weeks. This Heartbeat Bill represents one of the strongest laws protecting the unborn in the United States. The next step is to defend it.

Last August, the Tennessee legislature heard from many experts about the legal and scientific bases for the bill. Many had concerns about the legality of measure in light of Roe v. Wade.

CRE Chief Counsel Nate Kellum was one of those experts. He explained to the legislature that the scientific and legal bases that ungirded Roe v. Wade have been eroded, and no longer hold.  He pointed out that the viability standard was based on now-invalid medical understandings and that scientific advancements undermine the viability standard.

In light of these facts and the need for and propriety of a solid, workable, and scientifically-based legal standard, Tennessee has now adopted such a standard, based on heartbeat, a sure sign of life, ensuring broad protection for our most vulnerable.

“This is a momentous day for Tennesseans, and all Americans,” said Kellum. “Today, Tennessee takes a strong stand against the catastrophe of abortion and the indefensible Roe decision. Tennessee stands for life.”
